Give Students a Fair Go

This week, several New Zealand universities announced their plans to charge weekly fees to halls of residence students in order to retain the option of using their rooms following the COVID-19 lockdown. This is despite the fact that students are physically unable to access their rooms, and some universities temporarily closing halls altogether.

Many students are now facing job losses and immense financial pressure due to the impacts of COVID-19. While we appreciate the financial pressure universities may be under, they are far better placed to manage these pressures than students.

We’re calling on all New Zealand universities to commit to cancelling any halls of residence fees until students can travel back to their university centres and access their accommodation.

Charging students for rooms they can’t even access? It’s unfair, it’s unreasonable, and it’s unethical.
